Harlem is a small, historic Hendry County community founded in the 1920s as a settlement for Black sugar-plantation workers, bordering the City of Clewiston to its north.
The rental market here is dominated by one project-based Section 8 affordable housing community; there are no market-rate apartment complexes within this small, low-income CDP. A second complex marketed as being in "Clewiston" (Sweetwater Place) was checked and confirmed to sit inside Clewiston's incorporated city limits rather than Harlem, and was excluded.
