In 2019 I purchased the portable generator you see in pics. We never used it, and due to believing that it was "brand new", there was no reason for me to periodically turn it on to make sure it runs properly. Generator had all tags that said to make sure to put oil prior to starting it, and I never added any fluids in it.
This afternoon, setting stuff up to be ready for potential storm arriving, I took off the oil fill cap, and was getting ready to fill it up. I noticed the cap had a little oil by its gasket, but I could not see any oil inside the fill port. I though it was odd, however I filled it up to appropriate level. Next up, filling up the gas tank. After opening the cap, I was surprised to see there was some gas at bottom of tank. At this point I realized that this unit seems to have been a used one which was repackaged and sold as a "brand new" item. I got out of tank as much as possible from the fuel that was there. Poured approximately one gallon of fresh gas, Rec Fuel, in tank, and proceeded with the steps needed to start unit. After a lengthy period of trying, troubleshooting, and head scratching, I found out that there was no gas coming out of petcock into the hose that goes to carburetor. The lever moves normally from OFF to ON, however no gas comes out. After removing petcock off tank, attached you will see the condition the petcock was found. There was a sticky, caramelized-like substance throughout inside of petcock, which resembles what happens to old gas that stays stationary for extended periods of time. Rubber gaskets seemed to be old, likely due to being in contact with old gas for a long time. Seems as valve inside is stuck on OFF position, even though the lever moves normally. Attempted to clean it out, however I was unsuccessful.
You should be ashamed of selling something labeled as "brand new", when it is obvious it was used before, cleaned enough to make it look new, and sold to customers who believed in your company having honest business practices. I have no issue paying the price of an item that I need, long as I feel i can afford it and need it. However, I do have an issue with your store selling me a used item when what I paid for was a new item, and a new item is what I expected when I paid for it. Again, you should be ashamed.
I'm calling tomorrow to see if you have a petcock, hopefully a real brand new, brand new one!
P.S. : They are using my pic of the generator under Google Photos. Have you no shame!?
Great location with a very helpful and friendly staff.
Unlike many stores the people, at this location at least, treat you like they're genuinely glad to see you and help you find what you're looking for.
The only problem is I just went in for casters for a mobile lumber rack and ended up buying half the store it felt like due to all the good deals. 😅
