I received an unsolicited mailer from Miami Water Treatment Corp. that was clearly designed to look like an official government notice. It says “Water Update,” includes a stop sign symbol, and urges you to call within three days — all formatted to create urgency and authority. Nowhere at first glance does it clearly state that this is simply an advertisement.
After looking into it, it’s obvious they pulled my address from public county property records because I recently purchased my home. That may be legal, but it feels predatory and invasive. Targeting new homeowners with mailers that mimic official utility communications is misleading and manipulative.
This kind of marketing erodes trust. If a company’s services are valuable, they shouldn’t need to disguise advertisements as urgent notices. It comes across as ambulance-chasing behavior aimed at people who just closed on a home and are already juggling a dozen responsibilities.
I would strongly encourage others to read these mailers carefully before assuming they’re from the county or a public utility. Transparency matters!
