Apartment renters cannot control the building, but they can control their insurance, documents, evacuation plan and communication with management.
Before hurricane season
- Know the property's evacuation zone and your county's official alert system.
- Photograph your belongings and store policy documents securely.
- Ask management how shutters, elevators, gates and emergency communication are handled.
- Build a plan for pets, medications, transportation and several days without power.
When a storm threatens
Follow local emergency officials and property-management instructions. Charge devices, secure balcony items, move vehicles if directed and keep identification, medication, insurance information and essential supplies together. Never rely on social-media rumors for evacuation decisions.
After the storm
Do not enter restricted or visibly damaged areas. Photograph damage before cleanup when it is safe, notify management and your insurer promptly, and retain receipts for temporary living expenses. Flood and renters claims can follow different processes, so contact the appropriate insurer for each loss.
