Florida is home to more than 1.5 million veterans — the second-largest veteran population of any state. The state has made meaningful commitments to veteran benefits that go beyond federal entitlements. Here's what Florida-resident veterans should know.

Florida's Veteran Homestead Exemption

Florida offers veterans significant additional property tax exemptions on top of the standard $50,000 Homestead Exemption:

  • Veteran with service-connected disability (10% or more): Additional $5,000 exemption on top of standard Homestead Exemption. Disability must be service-connected and certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • 100% permanently disabled veteran: Full property tax exemption on the veteran's primary residence — the home is effectively zero property tax as long as the veteran owns and occupies it. This applies to veterans who are totally and permanently disabled due to service-connected conditions.
  • Veteran surviving spouse: Surviving spouses of qualifying veterans may continue to receive the disability exemption as long as they hold the title and the property was the veteran's primary residence at time of death.
  • Combat-disabled veteran over 65: Additional exemption equal to the percentage of service-connected disability multiplied by the home's assessed value. A 50% disabled veteran over 65 receives a 50% reduction in their taxable assessed value beyond standard exemptions.

Apply at your county property appraiser's office by March 1. Bring your VA disability rating letter and DD-214.

Florida's Vehicle Registration Discount

Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating receive free motor vehicle registration for one vehicle per year in Florida. Active duty military also receive registration fee exemptions. Apply at your county Tax Collector's office with your VA letter documenting your disability rating.

VA Healthcare in Florida

Florida has one of the largest VA healthcare systems in the country:

  • Bay Pines VA (St. Petersburg): Level I PACT Act hub serving Tampa Bay region
  • Miami VA Medical Center: Major academic medical center with full specialty services
  • Orlando VA Medical Center (Lake Nona): New facility; advanced specialty care
  • North Florida/South Georgia VA (Gainesville): Academic medical center with strong research programs
  • James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital (Tampa): One of the largest VA hospitals in the US; extensive specialty and surgical services
  • Multiple Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs): Smaller VA primary care locations throughout the state in cities like Sarasota, Fort Myers, Vero Beach, Daytona Beach, and dozens more

Florida VA facilities have improved substantially in recent years, and PACT Act eligibility expansions mean more veterans qualify for VA care than before. If you haven't enrolled or recently re-evaluated your eligibility, contact the VA enrollment office — the eligibility thresholds changed meaningfully in 2023.

Florida State Veterans' Benefits Beyond Federal Programs

  • Florida Veterans Foundation: State-supported emergency financial assistance for eligible Florida veterans in crisis situations (housing instability, utility shutoffs, etc.)
  • Disabled Veterans' Relief Fund: State grants for veterans with service-connected disabilities
  • Florida Veterans Homes: State-operated nursing homes with priority admission for Florida veteran residents. Six facilities across the state with high-quality long-term care at below-market rates for qualifying veterans.
  • Florida Driver License / ID fee waivers: Veterans with 100% disability ratings receive driver's license and state ID at no charge.

Education Benefits in Florida

Florida has a strong track record with GI Bill recipients:

  • Post-9/11 GI Bill covers Florida's public universities at in-state tuition rates for eligible veterans
  • Florida's Hazelwood Act equivalent — additional tuition waivers for some active duty and veteran dependents at Florida public colleges
  • Florida's in-state tuition rate for active duty military and their dependents regardless of residency duration

Finding Florida Veterans' Services

The Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs (FDVA) maintains service officers across all 67 Florida counties — free, accredited claims assistance with VA claims and appeals. County Veterans Service Officers (CVSOs) are the first stop for any benefits question: flvets.com or call 800-827-1000 for VA inquiries; your county's CVSO for state benefits navigation.
